Review of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) by Pascal G — 18 Feb 2009
One year later, after the box office smash of "I Know What You Did Last Summer", came, of course, "I STILL Know What You Did Last Summer".
Of course the survivors of the fist film, Freddie Prinze Jr, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, are back for the sequel. And are getting notes again. And replacing Ryan Phillipe & Sarah Michelle Gellar, are R&B pop star Brandy, and Mekhi Phifer, who appeared in most of Brandy's (and Monica's) videos. And would later become a star on TV's ER, is in dcent form here, but Brandy really over does it here.
The problem is, with this film, is that it's exactly like the first movie. Just two new characters replacing the old ones.
While it's filmed well, and the scare's are there, by the time we get to the climax I just don't care. As I said, Brandy, who is a good singer, (thought I prefered Monica), she's either not doing enough or either doing way too much, while I thought she was good on her TV series "Moesha", she should've stuck to her day job.
Hewitt & Prinze are good enough here I suppose, but again, it suffers from the same problem many sequels do. A retread. Trying to impress us with more gore-fests, and a slicker look. It don't work. While, I think back to numerous Horror sequels such as "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2" or even the "Friday the 13th Part 2" back in 1981, they were not near as good as it's predecessor, and followed those formulas, but at leat were not retreads, and had dimension to them.
While the sequel had to happen, I kinda wish it didn't. Not terrible, but bad either way.
