Review of I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) by Sonja D — 19 Mar 2010
'I Shot Andy Warhol (1996)' is an interesting biopic of Valerie Solanas, a militant feminist who, spoiler warning: shot Andy Warhol. Excellent performances help carry a film which has a considerably weak story, with Valerie Solanas unfortunately not proving to be engaging enough to really require the focus of attention.
However, Lili Taylor brings her to life excellently. Turning tricks on the street to make cash, despite her hatred of men Solanas isn't too fussed about riding them for a quick buck. Looking every bit the man-hating dyke, Taylor is believable in the role as she finds herself constantly being pushed aside in her efforts to strike it big. There are a few unnerving black and white scenes sprinkled throughout the film that feature Taylor looking directly into the camera and reciting from the SCUM manifesto (Society for Cutting Up Men) which showcase her skills as an actress as she holds the attention with ease.
Jared Harris makes a decidedly average Andy Warhol, but the standout actor here is Stephen Dorff as Candy Darling. Almost unrecognisable, his performance is daring and brilliant, and really has to be seen to be believed.
The story begins with the end - the shooting of Andy Warhol. Unfortunately, this doesn't leave much room for a great deal of drama to unfold. At times, it's almost tiresome waiting for the plot to kick in and for Solanas to begin interacting with Warhol. Scenes that lead away from this are distracting and feel quite unnecessary - the fact her life is difficult and that she gets screwed over by men is made abundantly clear.
The stellar performances raise this film from mediocrity, with lacklustre direction from Harron. The source material (after all, this is based on a true story) doesn't particularly help her, as it seems quite weak to begin with, but in more capable hands this could have been a 'Taxi Driver (1976)' for the feminist generation.
