Review of I Sell the Dead (2008) by Susan N — 15 Apr 2010
I Sell The Dead is a great investment for fans of horror and black comedy. I originally was sold on this film when I learned that Dominic Monaghan (yes, Charlie from TV's Lost) and Ron Perlman were the stars of the film. The film starts with Charlie's (he'll always be Charlie to me) initiation into the world of graverobbing in Victorian England.
After an inauspicious beginning in the trade, he and his partner are extorted into providing increasingly more bodies to the mad doctor buying them. And for all the Phantasm fans out there - the doctor is none other than Angus Scrim! Interestingly, he looks younger and better nourished than he did in the Phantasm films. Well, the partners leave the employ of the good doctor in an amusing way when they learn that more money's to be had from robbing the graves of the undead. This leads to more amusing unearthings and some trouble with another gang who's in competition with them.
The period piece is well done and has just the right sense of dark Victorian foreboding. The ending may be easy to spot before it gets to you but it does not detract from the film at all since this is not just a horror film but a black comedy as well. In end, I Sell The Dead is entertaining with just the right complement of horror and comedy. If this were a stock I would rate it a "buy"........
