Review of I Melt with You (2011) by Ryan H — 19 Dec 2011
This film could have been pitched as a "bro" movie, a mid-life coming of age film, a dark comedy, or many other labels and I would have definitely seen it regardless. I expected a lot from a film starring Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Rob Lowe and Sasha Grey(I include her, because I am sincerely waiting for her next performance worthy of coming after The Girlfriend Experience).
However, I was given 4 male leads who were completely unsympathetic or relatable, and not one single motivation of theirs lead me to believe this climax of this film made any sense. The joy of film is the ability of a filmmaker to make you feel emotion while watching the story that has been created, even if those emotions are negative.
Unfortunately, the only emotions I felt were disgust and boredom. I have a hunch that the filmmaker would say that you were supposed to feel a sense of helplessness and insecurity while watching, but I was too preoccupied with thinking about other things (chores, dinner, etc.
) to do that. However, I will note that Sasha Grey's part, though short, did win me over (did I mention already that I like her as an actress? yes? okay, good).
