Review of I Love You to Death (1990) by Storytellershannon M — 30 Jun 2012
A dark comedy loosely based on the true tale of a woman who tried to kill her husband multiple times for philandering. Kevin Kline plays the philandering Italian husband and just goes to show why he's a true actor who can play multiple personalities in pictures (compare him in this picture to âDaveâ? or âSophie's Choiceâ? or âA Fish Called Wandaâ? or âFrench Kissâ? and many others).
Tracy Ullman is his unassuming wife with supporting roles by River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, James Gammon, Joan Plowright,Heather Graham and William Hurt. Note that this picture was in 1990 so some of these people were not big names at the time.
Small role by Kline's wife, Phoebe Cates who was working on âDrop Dead Fredâ? and hence why her hair styles were the same in both pictures. Her appearance was uncredited and as a favor. Note the homage to âBridge on the River Kwaiâ? during one scene.
The budget for this picture was a tad over $16M and it just about broke even at the Box Office. And that just goes to show that audiences are sometimes clueless.
HUMOR: B to B plus; STORY/PLOTTING: B plus; CHARACTERS/DIALOGUE: B plus to A minus; CINEMATOGRAPHY: B to B plus; WHEN WATCHED: end of June 2012 (3rd viewing); OVERALL GRADE: B plus.
