Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Sausages M — 20 Apr 2013
Very good gay love story that doesn't lapse into the normal clichés. Well, it does then it doesn't- you'll see. Jim Carrey is very good in the central role of this bizarre true story about a conman, his epiphany and the insane journey he finds himself on after a life-changing moment.
Quirky, but not in an irritating way; fast-paced, but not choppy- this is a very well directed film with some nice cinematographic touches here and there on top of the conventional love-story-turned-on-its-head type thing that Hollywood produces every now and then.
Ewan McGregor is surprisingly convincing as the titular object of affection; his portrayal of a gentle, sensitive younger (than Carey) gay man from the South is quite excellent. And I had to say I loved the twist at the end- very clever given the subject matter.
I'm not sure this film did that well on release because of the subject matter (quelle surprise!) but I believe it's now doing a lot better after the fact and that's really heartening to see.
More of this please, Hollywood!
