Review of I Love You Phillip Morris (2010) by Renzo V — 11 Mar 2014
"A TALE OF FRAUD, GAY LOVE AND PRISON".
- 'I Love You Phillip Morris' is a 2009 romantic comedy-drama based on true events, starring the brilliant Jim Carrey (The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) and a fantastic Ewan McGregor (The Impossible, Star Wars Prequels). It's the love story of a gay con-artist and his cellmate. Both Carrey and McGregor put down a great performance and I really enjoyed the beginning of the film and the humor it presented, pity I lost interest along the way.
Steven Jay Russell (Carrey) is a Virginia Beach police officer, happily married to the beautiful Debbie and father to a wonderful daughter. As a good Christian he even plays the church organ on Sundays. But Steven has a secret: he's gay! One night after having sex with a man, he gets injured in a car accident. His near-death experience makes him realize he has to stop living a lie. He comes out of the closet, leaves his family and moves to Miami where he begins a new but very expensive life. Soon Steven finds himself in need of money and he becomes a con artist. But eventually the fraud leads to his arrest. He is send to prison, where he meets the man of his dreams: the shy Phillip Morris (McGregor).
