Review of I Love You, Daddy (2017) by Ewan G — 14 Oct 2018
With all the negativity surrounding this movie, it's hard to detach the product from reality. Even without the ironic splattering of the current rise of feminism in Hollywood and how it contrasts in this film, C.K.'s direction is oddly enthusiastic. Although controversial, you have to admire the self funding secrecy of the movie. But even that has much sinister tones given the subject matter, and ultimately the reasoning for not releasing the movie. Rather than a coy look into the world of objective feminism and sexual harassment, it becomes a sick game that C.K. guides us through with eerily delicate commitment and expertise.
Still, it's not as if the movie has anything going for it anyways. Although a well cast movie, nobody is really bringing their A-Game, and the writing on a whole is extremely poor and dull. I've always made it a rule to myself to never re-review a movie. But with this, it seems I may have to make a special consideration. Perhaps a look back in a year or so, because already, the controversy behind Louis C.K.'s actions has already died down. Because, behind all the twisted horror stories and behind the scenes drama, there's some genuinely good direction in here which makes me oddly tantalised for what Louis C.K. does next...
