Review of I Kill Giants (2017) by Tim W — 01 Oct 2018
Coming hard on the heels of a very similar offering, A Monster Calls, this is a heartbreaking and sometimes disturbing take on a young girls mental anguish caused by her mother's terminal illness. It's less successful than Monster as it spreads the tension between too many bit players.
Zoe Saldana gives a good account of herself but she's completely uneccesary, as is the young British friend. An astonishing performance from the young lead however. My main gripe is that they ended it at the wrong point.
The scene on the bed with daughter and mum was a real tear-jerker and it should have stopped there. The additional classroom, funeral and bedroom scenes were mawkish and contrived and I felt the poignancy dissipate as a result.
