Review of I Feel Pretty (2018) by Jeanette Z — 20 Apr 2018
Yes, Amy Schumer makes jokes at the expense of her body in this movie, but she's done that in her comedy since she started. The point is that DESPITE her whiteness, her relative attractiveness, her able-bodied-ness, she still does not fit the media ideal (or NYC ideal, for all those who've lived in NY) of feminine beauty.
She still taps into a lack of confidence almost all women have felt, and to say that as a young, white, average weight female she doesn't have the right to express a lack of confidence in her body is in itself making value judgments about a woman's body! It's funny, it's poignant, and it's good.
