Review of I Feel Pretty (2018) by Scooter P — 09 May 2018
Fun premise with a hit and miss execution.
Amy Schumer plays Renee, a chubby young woman whose self-worth is limited by the sometimes harsh manner in which others view her. She imagines that if she were thin and beautiful her life would be wonderful. After accidentally hitting her head in cycling class at the gym, she looks in the mirror and sees herself as gorgeous. Suddenly "hot," if only in her own mind, she becomes the uber-confident woman she always dreamt of being.
Because this is Amy Schumer and this is a comedy, she doesn't become quietly confident. She's over the top confident in her imagined immense appeal, which makes for some funny moments when others try to reconcile the disparity between her actual appearance and her belief that she is irresistibly hot. Since her antics likely would elicit eye-rolls even if she were as gorgeous as she imagines, this makes for funny but sometimes cringe-worthy scenes. The apparent message about confidence and self-worth gets muddled by attempts to squeeze more comedy or conflict into the narrative.
All in all, it was a mildly enjoyable film, but not one I'd recommend.
