Review of I Care a Lot (2021) by Seand — 21 Feb 2021
Just a very boring movie with too many old Hollywood mainstream action/thriller cliches such as the main characters surviving insurmountable challenges to their lives while other characters conveniently die off screen in 2 seconds and elaborate schemes falling into place perfectly no matter how improbable they are. And the filmmakers try to hide the extremely ancient and played out tropes by trying to to justify that this story of unrelatable and inhuman caricatures is somehow socially relevant. The first hour of the movie tries repeatedly to justify that gender roles and the subversion of them have something to with the story. Later it just gives up with trying to masquerade as a feminist movie and just devolves into what it actually is, a thriller with not enough thrills with a cast of conventionally attractive women posing and acting 'cool.'
It isn't funny enough to be classified as a dark comedy, isn't relevant or self-aware enough to be satire, isn't disturbing enough to be horror and just isn't stimulating enough to be good. And no, I refuse to call this feminist cinema since just making sure that the doctor and the shopkeeper is played by a female while the receptionist is a black man is just not enough to start a conversation about gender or racial equality.
Maybe try again...
