Review of I Believe in Miracles (2015) by Clint S — 06 Apr 2016
If only a miracle like this could happen to them now...
Let me start off by saying that I am a Forest supporter, and so I am majorly biased. This documentary follows the standard talking head, inter-sped with archive footage model. Telling the story of the early Brian Clough glory years of Nottingham Forest, when the club won it's league titles and European Cups. The problem here is that, if you know that story, you don't need to see this, but if you know that story, this is what you are the audience for. The stand out moments here are the humourous moments and the clever editing, rather than the learning of anything. It hurts me to speak ill of a film of the team that I support, but I didn't love this. It actually quite bored me.
This documentary goes from the achieve footage to that of talking head of the club personnel around that time. They've done a good job of getting some prestigious people together to talk about their experiences around that time. In a time where I find myself falling out of football; it heals the soul to hear of the days when it was a harder sport. The talking head interviews are well-edited, to create humour and intrigue(ish), but this lacks any impetus. The same old information, just in a different skin. At first it is interesting and then it loses itself and the viewer. Something about the tossing from interview to achieve, gets lethargic after a while. If you are a Forest fan, you'll likely be disappointed, and if not, then you probably don't need to be watching this. If you don't know much about the era, then this will teach you some, but a Forest supporter knows all about that time in history. In the end, the fire sparks and burns too long.
