Review of I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016) by Ron T B — 22 Sep 2016
I've never heard of this movie until it was brought up on a horror-themed analysis web series I watch.
The story follows John Wayne Cleaver; a diagnosed sociopath played Max Records. He lives in a small town that has an unknown serial killer on the loose. It is based on a series of novels under the same name written by Dan Wells. The great Christopher Lloyd does a great job as Cleaver's neighbor, in a role like I've never seen from him. There are some bright spots of writing in this one. The cinematography and the soundtrack were both pretty good.
I had a couple of complaints with this one. My main complaint is my usual complaint, the use of bad CGI. There is a key scene that was underwhelming because they opted for CGI instead of practical effects. This is a common problem with indie genre films. The other complaint I had was with the climax of the story. It was leading me down a path to a deserving outcome, but took a turn and missed the mark for me.
All and all, I think it's a pretty good effort in the indie scene. The good outweighs the bad for me in this one. I recommend checking it out, especially for genre fans.
