Review of I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016) by Stuart M — 19 Feb 2017
A sociopath hunts down another sociopath. Basically sounds like Dexter right? But this time the lead sociopath is a confused teenage boy who finds himself drawn to death and violence but always holds himself back.
And the rival is a literal demon inhabiting the body of an old man. Which is? different to say the least. The film plays out a bit like a black comedy, as our troubled teen protagonist struggles to figure out what the right thing to do is.
And there is an emotional journey, even if it's an odd one. I have to be honest, I didn't find the film's depiction of sociopathy very believable. The lead character's more emotionally shut down and angsty than sociopathic (apart from a few instances) and it tends to equate serial killer and sociopath with each other, even though most sociopaths have no desire to be serial killers.
They just wouldn't care about the lives they took if they did. But overall, the film was entertaining and unique.
