Review of I Am Love (2010) by Ola S — 21 Jul 2010
Tilda Swinton has said that "style" is the most important element in a movie. It's certainly true about this product, which shows the Milanese upper-class at its most handsome. They are not only sophisticated, but also nice to the servants, tolerant about a daughter who has a mistress, and at least one of the sons even has genuine bad conscience about his factory workers families, when they lose their job.
So everything is perfect, until Swinton starts this affair with the son's best friend who, stylishly enough, is just a cook. Swinton is however a good actress, no doubt about that, with a face which can mean zero and the next second everything.
But it's a cold movie and some of the sex scenes, accompanied by flowers and suspect insects, are somewhat parodic. It's devastating passion à la Harper's Bazaar. Absolutely beautiful, but style has really nothing to do with important filmmaking.
