Review of I Am David (2003) by Glenn E — 19 Oct 2004
** I AM DAVID - A boy escapes a forced labor camp in Bulgaria during the communist period and goes on an adventure across Europe. It has an odd tone; like "Schindler's List" as done by Walt Disney. I found out later that this is based on a classic children's book referred to as the "single finest novel ever written for children of about ages 9 to 13". In America, the title was changed to "North To Freedom". This would explain the simplistic plot elements. There have been some fine movies meant for children that don't talk down to them that I've liked much better than this (1995's "A Little Princess" and 1998's "The Mighty" (aka "Freak The Mighty"))..
This isn't terrible, but could have been better. With Joan Plowright and Jim Caviezal, it opens December 3..
