Review of I Am David (2003) by Frances H — 09 Dec 2012
Although there are some problems with this film--the child looks too well-nourished, we have no idea how he gets most of his food on the journey, and the miraculous way he seems to understand other languages is a bit much--there is also much to recommend it.
Joan Plowright always delivers a good performance and Jim Caviezel's performance here is good as well. The cinematography is beautiful and the themes of humanity's goo and evil sides are well developed, as is the theme of self-sacrifice and that even in a postwar Europe uneasy with Cold War tensions, some people, including a guard at the slave labor camp, could still care enough about the fate of a child to try to help.
