Review of I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) by Alex C — 16 Jan 2009
One of the best films of the early 1930's, and it still packs an emotional punch today. It's the story of James Allen, a man who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and is charged for a crime he didn't commit and sent to prison.
However, he breaks out and ends up starting a successful normal life, but will his old life catch up to him? Paul Muni shows he was one of the first great actors of the sound era in what is a very tough and gritty masterpiece by Mervyn LeRoy.
The film has plenty of truth about prison brutality and the effects it has on those after they leave the prison system. It's a definite social and dramatic triumph.
