Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by D.j. M — 10 Sep 2008
"Everybody got to have a dream. . .".
Terrence Howard's performance as DJay easily makes my list of Top 10 Best Performances Ever. It is one of those rare occasions where the actor ceases to exist and a living breathing real character is brought to life in their place. Hustle & Flow was not only one of the best films of 2005 but immediately became one of my favorite films of all time. I will see anything Craig Brewer writes or directs from here on out. The cast in this is absolutely fantastic, every single one of them delivers great performances, and combined with Brewer's depiciton of Memphis, it makes for a movie that is so real you easily get lost in it. It's a movie about chasing down your dreams and doing what you have to to achieve them. A highly inspiring story from an unlikely subject. This one will go down as one of the very best films of the 2000s. It alss includes my favorite bit of subtle foreshadowing on film.
"It ain't over for me.
No, it ain't over for me.
I'ma step my game up and get what's comin to me. . .".
