Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by Curtis P — 22 Feb 2010
Original, smart film from start to finish. Writer/Director Craig Brewer manages to tell a tough, uncompromising urban story but also makes it funny, and even moving. He layers the picture with grit you can almost feel and gives it a fresh, funky, southern vibe.
DJay, the pimp and small time hustler with a dream, is brought to life magnificently by Terrence Howard. His character is not a nice guy; he can have moments of rage and brutality, but also vulnerability.
He's human all the way. The supporting cast is also strong. I should put in a special word for Taryn Manning in particular. She really breaks out as a strong actress in this role, displaying an appealing, rare mix of bridled ferocity and vibrancy, that feels totally authentic, like everything else in the film.
