I was really hoping that the little mention of not being able to guess the ending of her book would be a foreshadow, but it really wasn't. I wonder how many endings were worked through before it was decided to stick with the typical genre framework and ending.

As mentioned in other reviews having the lead portrayed as deaf pays off in spades when it comes to building tension, and small touches like that make it work. If those touches weren't there this would have been a complete flop.

..although admittedly I was hoping for a bit more after the strong first half.
