Review of Hush (2016) by Marc J — 01 Jan 2019
Having a protagonist who cannot hear or speak is a VERY original element for a horror/thriller movie to include. I like it. Because of her impairments, it is difficult for her to function well out in the world, so she doesn't very often.
For the most part, the successful author stays at her isolated home in the woods and writes books. Nut think about it... Isolated home in the woods, I think we all know where this is going. After Sarah, one of her closest friends, visits lead character Maddie, our predictions come true.
A masked killer arrives, and the attacks begin. Creating a feature length home invasion movies pretty much just two characters, (we only briefly see others) seems like a difficult task, but writer-director Mike Flanagan successfully fills all (or a least most) moments with legitimate tension and suspense.
They go through pretty much every square inch of the house, and because she can not hear him coming or communicate with him, Maddie must be extra aware and extra resourceful. It has a nice length of one-hour-and-twenty-seven-minutes, a bit on the shorter side of feature length, but I'm just happy that it didn't fall victim to the never ending final horror movie act that just gets stupider and stupider as it goes.
Okay, so this isn't groundbreaking cinema, but as far as straight-to-Netflix-films go, this one is sure to satisfy. Something that kind of annoyed me, was that the attacker unmasked himself too early.
Why was he in a rush to do that? It was a scary mask that didn't get the amount of time on screen that it deserved. Other than that though, if you want to see a one-of-a-kind home invasion thriller, try Hush.
I think it to be a good recommendation.
