Brilliant film that expresses the point of view that love is, essentially, an illusion. But the critics who called it depressing are simply wrong; as with all Allen films, there is the possibility of hope; even though Allen's character resists the rashness and spontaneity of a phony romantic moment, he is ultimately lost without some kind of stabilising companionship that Allen as director believes that marriage provides.
