Review of Husbands (1970) by James T — 07 Jan 2009
Three best friends deal with the death of a fourth by running away, both literally and figuratively. It may be overlong and unevenly paced, but the cinematography is stunning, whilst the three male leads, John Cassavetes, Ben Gazzara and Peter Falk put in powerhouse performances, studies in jokey bragadaccio, confused misogyny and middle-aged anxiety - three men on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
A funny, emotional, difficult, thought provoking but ultimately rewarding piece of film-making from the criminally under-appreciated Cassavetes.
