Review of Husbands (1970) by Aaron W — 11 Mar 2009
John Cassavetes is a God. Nobody makes films like this anymore. People think they do. This whole fucking "indie" movement bullshit "honest" filmmaking. Honest my ass. These assholes wouldn't know honest if it sucker-punched them in the balls.
Honest isn't some loner writer shooting heroin and getting drunk in his room after his brother commits suicide and his mother gets cancer. That's crap, bullshit wannabe crap. Honest is three friends, shouting at each other, playing basketball .
..confused, laughing for the sake of laughing, nonsensical, angry, drunk, gambling, trying to save themselves from the realization that they hate their lives. Husbands is an honest film, and some people may have a problem with that.
It's not wrapped up in some nice little timed out three act structure. Falk, Gazzara and Cassavetes on screen together create one helluva a volatile trio. This film is incredible.
