Review of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) by Jono M — 20 Jun 2016
Hunt For The Wilderpeople is hilarious. That shouldn't be a surprise, considering that writer/director Taika Waititi was also in charge of What We Do In The Shadows and several episodes of Flight of the Conchords.
But even with that in mind, I was still surprised by just how funny this movie is. Julian Dennison is in the main role as a kid called Ricky, and his comic timing and natural charisma are big parts of why this movie works so well.
Bouncing off Sam Neill, who plays quite a gruff and grumpy role, makes him even funnier. The story has a lot to offer too. For a kids movie, it actually tells a pretty dark and interesting tale, which might take a few people by surprise.
Luckily, the comedy elements balance this out really well, which is why it's such a good film for kids and adults alike.
