Review of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) by Mo P — 28 Jun 2016
I was invited out to see this movie, otherwise probably wouldn't have gone. Well, what a marvellous surprise it was. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy it, laughing so much and loving the New Zealand bush scenery, but the whole theatre of people seemed to be having a great time.
Rima Te Wiata, while only on screen a short time, was fabulous, and it was neat to see Sam Neill in a completely different sort of role. The young lead, Julian Dennison, had great comedic timing and was skilled enough to be funny when he was doing and saying almost nothing.
There were a couple of jokes that only Kiwis, and maybe some Aussies and tourists, would get but, hey, most movies probably have some reasonably well-hidden humour designed for those "in the know". Yes, the ending was predictable, and I think could have been shortened a little, but I felt so good after watching the rest of the film that I just let the final few scenes wash over me.
Super well done to all concerned.
