Review of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) by Alexandra R — 10 Apr 2017
WHAT I LIKED: 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' is one of the most delightful and humbling movie experiences out there, as its overall aims, and the charm with which it's all dealt, strips your own feelings of joy right back to their cores. Yes in building everything around two beautifully constructed people and a relationship with the natural world, the film really touches you somewhere deep down and brings a warm sense of joy and a humanity of its own. Layer on top Taika Waititi's fantastic whit and quirky style, and the happiness-factor is only upped, resulting in a rather poetic, genuinely wonderful film indeed.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It is fairly simple, but its appeal is well-routed.
VERDICT: One of the best films of 2016, and one of my personal all-time favourites - this film's got soul, and that triumph sits mostly in the hands of Taika Waititi.
