Review of Humpday (2009) by Ryan R — 26 Jul 2009
Takes "bromance" to it's inevitable conclusion. Very moving story that is not really about sex at all, gay or straight. It's about two men who aren't sure what they want out of life and through strange (and strangely believable) circumstances, come to the conclusion that a roll in the hay on camera will provide them with the answers.
The acting is excellent. It's all improvised, and it rarely shows. Both men are hilarious and completely three dimensional. Subtlety and nuance are especially hard in improv, but they mostly pull it off.
There are a few moments of telling and not showing that probably wouldn't have been in a well-written script. Kudos to Alycia Delmore, who played the wife of one of the men. She manages to completely avoid the "wet blanket wife" stereotype that's commonly found in buddy comedies.
Her response to her husbands request is also completely believable. All in all, far more profound and moving than I expected, and far less "gay".
