Review of Humpday (2009) by Gio G — 09 Nov 2009
The film did not meet my expectations. It well exceeded them. I was expecting more of a cheeky Bro-Mance type jazz, but that is not what's going on here. This takes cinema-verite to a new place. It is not a mockumentary.
There are no 1st person interviews. However, the camera is noticably present and the conversations are painfully, beautifully intimate and intricate. It is a study of relationships in an amazing way. Some have said that "nothing really happens" in this film.
This is, in some ways, true. If you are a film-goer who defines "stuff happens" as explosions, car chases, boobs, and farts, then yes, nothing happens at all. However, if hard-core, pure, honest human converation, interaction, and conflict is important to your daily life, as it is mine, then a whole shit-load of stuff happens.
Superbly acted, written, and directed. Free-flowing and honest.
