Review of Humpday (2009) by Rhian G — 18 Dec 2009
This movie takes a ludicrous plot that could easily be seen in another straight-to-video American Pie sequel, and actually turns it into something that is beyond funny - it's actually thought provoking. In all honesty, this film is a comedy, but it probably won't be what you're expecting. There are very few, if any, actual "gags". Almost all of the humor comes from moments involving clever little remarks, witty comebacks, and awkward observations that all feel completely natural and conversational. It's not like listening to roommates bicker in a Judd Aptow film, but rather like laughing under your breath at a humorous conversation you're overhearing between two friends sitting near you on a bus.
Another thing I thought was great about this film was the reason given behind why these two friends decided to make this film. It seems preposterous to suggest the idea of two guys screwing on camera as purely an artistic endeavor... but the film had me convinced. Convinced, at least, as much as the characters in the film were. But you'll probably have to see the film to understand what I mean by that.
Bottom line: Amazing writing. Genuine and honest performances by everyone all around. Clever and original idea. Based in Seattle. I loved it.
