Review of Hulk (2003) by Aki T — 12 Nov 2014
Hulk is a movie that had its reputation ruined by being released too early. When superhero films had only started to become mainstream with the X-Men and Spider-Man films, Ang Lee's adaptation of the large green guy played it with a straight face, resulting in a more adult and dramatic comic book film.
This is a shame because Hulk is totally undeserving of the hate heaped upon it. Lee directs this film expertly and really makes you feel for the characters. Eric Bana in particular is terrific as a brooding Bruce Banner and feels closer to the character in the comics than Edward Norton.
Jennifer Connelly and Nick Nolte are also completely solid in their roles. The story isn't your traditional superhero origin story and goes deeper into the characters and the psychology of Bruce Banner which is refreshing for a comic book film released at the time.
The cliffhanger ending also leaves you wanting a sequel (which sadly never came around). The visuals do look a bit smudgy and outdated even by 2003 standards and the slow pace may put some people off.
However, those are really minor problems. This is a very sadly underrated superhero drama that whilst not exactly The Dark Knight, still feels grounded and intense in moments.
