Review of Howl (2010) by Barry R — 22 Oct 2010
Biopic of 'beat poet' Allen Ginsberg that focuses on his poem Howl and the obscenity trial that followed its publication in 1957. Writer/Directors Epstein and Friedman employ an interesting structure to the film with plot threads showing Ginsberg's creation of the work, a public reading, the courtroom drama and an animated interpretation of the poem itself.
It's a skillful approach and James Franco gives it his all as Ginsberg, but it just didn't draw me in on any kind of emotional level. For fans of the beat generation the film is no doubt a must-see though.
