Review of Howl (2010) by Ojas V — 11 Nov 2010
This is an interesting look at one of the most famous and controversial poems of the 20th century, Allen Ginsburg's HOWL. Franco does a good job capturing Ginsburg's idiosyncrasies, without going overboard.
I also liked the way the film jumped from poem to courtroom. However, as trippy as the animation segments were...it does a disservice to anyone who reads poetry to animate each segment. It can be very annoying to see someone elses interpretation of HOWL, and sometimes it plays safe with some of the imagery contained in the poem.
This is a good film for anyone who wants an introduction to the BEAT generation, and their aesthetic sensibilities.
