Review of Howl (2010) by Momoko A — 22 Aug 2011
Howl was a surprise pleasure. Firstly, it's a visual pleasure with a wonderful mixture of animation, beautifully graded B/W and colour shots and archive footage. Plus interesting editing. Secondly, it's an audio pleasure.
The poems narrated/recited by James Franco in very characteristic way are vulgar but sensitive at the same time. Thirdly, James Franco as Allen Ginsberg is understated but quirky and subtly charismatic.
Delightfully designed, the film captures the atmosphere of 50s America. Some might find the film pretentious but I found it very touching.
