Review of Howl (2010) by John M — 13 Sep 2011
Not as terrible as billed, but a bit of a mess. Perhaps it comes from a slavish devotion to transcripts, trying to give a documentary feel to staged productions, none of which has the urgency of scripted fiction or the immediacy of documentaries.
None of the actors shine here, not for lack of talent, so you have to blame direction. The animated sequences actually work the best, I think, with the Ginsberg interview a distant second. Everything that should be foreground (the trial and the epic debut performance) flounder.
