Review of Howards End (1992) by Nicole B — 07 Nov 2007
Probably more complex than 'The Remains of the Day' but less satisfying. Either way, a brilliant character study. Costume dramas are either stylistic (like Jane Campion) or restrained and matter-of-fact (the sadly-former Merchant/Ivory gold standard), and this is an example of matter-of-fact done right.
Emma Thompson is fantastic and Vanessa Redgrave gives one of her best performances.
