Review of How the West Was Won (1962) by Brandon S — 28 Aug 2010
I truly don't see what all the praise for this movie is about. Let me elaborate... it *is* beautifully filmed, but beyond that it is completely cliche, shallow writing, cardboard performances... even the musical score feels predictable and sappy.
I surmise this movie won its Academy Awards on the merits of it's sense of self-importance and grandiose styling. Otherwise, give me a break. There were a number of films made in the late '50s and early '60s in the same genre that were exceptionally well written and still stand the test of time.
I have broad tastes and am very tolerant with films, but don't try to fool me with style over substance. This one... oh boy.
