Review of How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998) by David A — 07 May 2010
(from The Watermark, 09/05/98).
The first half is fine. An uptight big-city stockbroker (Bassett) goes on a vacation to Jamaica and meets her dream man (Diggs). Complication: he's 20 years old, and she's 40. But she decides to go for it anyway. You go girl! The second half is dull -- that only-in-the-movies silliness where Bassett keeps flip-flopping, unsure of whether bringing Diggs into her life and into her home is the right decision. Of course it is, Angie! He's gorgeous and he's a nice guy, you fool! The screenplay is so lame, Goldberg can't even make it funny, though God knows she tries awfully hard. Bassett looks flawless with her braids and washboard abs -- but even her excellent performance can't save this unsalvageable film. Angie -- divas like you deserve better!
