Review of House on Haunted Hill (1959) by Anna N — 01 May 2009
As I'm watching these older horror classics, I try to keep in mind the time in which they were released. The original "House on Haunted Hill" came out in 1958. While it does feel modest and even cheesy at times compared to the extremities of today's horror movies, it doesn't mean that "House on Haunted Hill" doesn't have its place in influencing the genre.
..nor should it be any less respected. In fact, I find this version much more interesting than the poor excuse for a remake that came out in 1999. Something about an old black and white horror movie can be creepy in its simplicity - especially when watching in the dark.
In the case of "House on Haunted Hill," Vincent Price's ominous presence and uncanny delivery, the shadowy rooms of the house, and the general apprehension that ensues for the film's characters --- you can't help but feel a little uneasy too.
