Review of House of Wax (2005) by Jacob A — 22 Feb 2012
The opening scene catches the eye in a good way despite being a modern horror cliche. Then there's some sloppily filmed, scripted, and edited exposition for the real plot. However, once the action starts, the film becomes more than bearable.
It is formulaic, but the unique and innovative setting and premise prevent House of Wax from reaching a state of tedium. Once the excitement kicks in, it keeps going. An impeccable balance of dread and hope is maintained throughout the majority of the film, keeping audience members on their toes.
The suspense is killer. The special effects and cinematography are also deserving of some praise - it's hard to believe the same team was in charge of the lackluster beginning portion. The acting as well is above par for a modern horror flick; it's not spectacular, but Elisha Cuthbert plays the protagonist quite well.
However, the ending is so grandiose and over the top that it will make you feel stupid for buying into the whole "house made of wax" thing. To withhold spoilers, I'll just say the villains wouldn't be capable of achieving what they do in the real world and that the film isn't set in an alternate reality with superhumans, so this is a bad thing.
It's still a decent film though, especially the rising action before the climax. And if you're curious at all about Paris Hilton's death scene, I say just go for it!
