Review of House of Wax (2005) by Franz P — 27 Jun 2015
It pains me to admit that anything involving Paris Hilton can be entertaining, but this is actually quite a captivating watch. It's real hillbilly territory and a typical horror setting as six teens agree to camp overnight at a desolate field on their way to a football game.
As they soon discover when their car breaks down, the nearby town is not as friendly as it first appears and the touristic looking House of Wax museum is more real than one could ever imagine. One by one as they all decide to split up in search of one another, they soon fall victim to the locals and end up becoming a piece of art within the museum itself.
The scenes are built up very well, and it climaxes with what everyone is hoping for - Paris getting brutally murdered in comical fashion. Of course we have the obligatory striptease before that moment but thankfully she's more action than words so she isn't given chance to ruin what is otherwise quite a well acted script.
I like the originality that this brings, and that it's not just a random serial killer on the loose, it actually has a backstory and meaning to its torture. The middle part feels a little rushed after a somewhat solid build up and once the first victim falls, everyone else is in quick succession.
I'm surprised there hasn't been a sequel starring Paris' best mate whose name I can't remember, but I suspect if there were to be, it would be complete trash. This is cheesy as hell but it really hits the spot with me and oozes repeat value.
It treats Paris like the bitch she is, and brings us a gruesome slasher in addition - Perfect!
