Review of House of Wax (1953) by Sarah H — 04 Jan 2010
House of Wax is a brilliant classic horror film, and it starring Vincent Price just makes it that much better. Price plays the insane Professor excellently as he descends into madness after the loss of his "children" wax figures, especially his love Marie Antoinette.
The plot is much more believable than that of modern "horror" affairs which chase higher certificates with the most amount of blood, whereas a film such as House of Wax (1953) doesn't need a high certificate to be thrilling.
Vincent Price's turn as the Professor is absolutely brilliant - he is a very sweet character at the beginning of the film, although his strange obsession with his wax figures is a little odd, and he is a very kindly gentleman who only wants to show the world the beauty in his work.
However he is turned into a complete shell of his former self when his business partner torches his beloved museum, and along with it his Marie Antoinette whom he loved the most.
He is driven insane by his horrible loss and goes on a warped rampage in order to get back at the world, and give them the horror they so wished for with his new museum, the House of Wax.
Definitely worth watching if you want to enjoy some decent, old fashioned horror starring the Master himself.
