Review of House of the Dead (2003) by Chris — 01 Aug 2010
Famously rubbish film director Uwe Boll directs (there's an overstatement) this nonsensical, dire zombie movie based on the popular arcade game and creates a film so bad you'll be trying for weeks to forget the game and its film adaptation even existed in the first place.
Basically a bunch of students pay a THOUSAND dollars to go to a rave on a creepy island (who does that???) only to find that it's full of crappy-looking zombies who, although they can swim, have never even tried to leave the island and take over the world. They are just not that ambitious.
A bunch of intensely annoying twenty somethings get butchered one by one as poor old Jurgen Prochnow (Das Boot) tries to look for his career somewhere inside his boat for about an hour. Uwe Boll throws actual shots from the game at us every chance he gets (BAAAAAD IDEA), rips off The Matrix's bullet-time effects about 200 million times, throws away all notions of continuity and references Scooby Doo.
Terrible terrible film. But if you like bad movies, as I do, you can't go wrong with this one.
