Review of House of the Dead (2003) by Jeffrey M — 24 Apr 2012
Boll seems to be not so much honing his movie-craft as discovering it as he films movies. The inept and shoddiness of his work pervades every aspect to the point there is no fun in viewing the material as a guilty or ironic pleasure.
Cutting in game footage was baffling, gracefully swimming zombies, poor costumes & makeup and most scenes lacked pace and tension. Oddly he seems to have taken his title too literally and made it about a rave with constant electronica for a soundtrack.
I do give credit for some reasonable stunt work, some decent sets, large scale final battle and being one of the few zombie movies to actually acknowledge the existence of zombie movies... even if his zombies swim rather gracefully.
