Review of House of Sand and Fog (2003) by David M — 25 Sep 2012
It loses a whole star for what is a terrible third act. A marvelously acted drama over a deceptively simple premise, takes a lot of unsympathetic characters and treats them all equally, on all sides of the conflict.
No sides are taken, so clear right and wrong. Jennifer Connely (who has strangely, maybe by her own volition, never become a star despite all the attributes to become one) is especially fantastic. The last 30 minutes completely jump off the rails, throw all the subtlety out the window, and seem to take the characters to extremes as it searches to find a way to tie a neat bow on the proceedings with cliche hostage situations, and unfortunate death by child, and suicides.
A missed opportunity.
