Review of House of Flying Daggers (2004) by Jim C — 22 May 2010
The cinematography in 'The House of Flying Daggers' is simply breathtaking. Costuming was probably the best I've seen since Sir Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings'. Three scenes alone - the bamboo forest scene, the alder forest scene and the snow scene - are enough to rate this film 4 stars.
Yimou Zhang's direction keeps the action fluid and the actors on cue. Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhang Ziyi are both very talented and are also both amazingly beautiful. There's a scene with them, him in bright blue silk and her in dark purple and maroon silk that caused me to think, "If JRR Tolkien had seen this film, THIS is what his elves would have looked like".
They're stunning, probably the most beautiful single scene I've ever seen in any movie at any time. I don't want to say anything else about this movie except 'see it!'.
