Review of House of Flying Daggers (2004) by Dan W — 11 Dec 2014
Visually the film offers a depth and catharsis that one gets from studying intricate Oriental artwork. The line between the aggressive intent of violence and the visual poetry of martial arts is profound.
However, the melodrama of the tryst and the double and triple crossing is ridiculous. I can only assume that it is a common dramatic function is Chinese dynasty story telling. Seriously, at some points the 'conspiracy' is like a comical twist you'd expect is Naked Gun or Austin Powers.
Overall, this is worth watching but do it alone because with another you'll either end up taking the piss out of it or one person will pretend they 'get it' and the other will be like 'you're a wanker.'.
