Review of House of Dracula (1945) by Nathan B — 14 Oct 2007
Fun, breezy, brainless Universal Monster Mash with Lon Chaney Jr as the Wolf Man, morose and drepressed, wanting to be cured of lycanthropy or, if that fails, die; John Carradine as a sophisticated, suave, top-hatted Dracula, also looking for a cure for his "disease"; Glenn Strange as the Frankenstein Monster, strapped to a table with VERY little to do for almost all of the running time.
This is probably the least of Universal's Monster Mashes (the others being Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man and House of Frankenstein) but it does have a fairly intriguing story and good performances and undeniably has that special Universal touch.
The photography and sets are wonderful and the directing is fine, it's just that, by this time, you can tell that Universal was starting to really get bored with their monsters. Still, a fun romp.
Check it out.
